I have two of these little guys and they have suffered allergies from food to pollen to just about everything you can be allergic to.
For skin allergies I tried most brands of dog food. I am now using a kibble that uses the ingredients found in the breeds original homeland which would be The Isle of Skye in Scotland.
In Scotland the West Highland White Terrier were bred to kill vermin. They have huge teeth and nails in relationship to their size. This was so they could dig their way into Cairns where they kept the grain and kill the rodents who were eating the grains.
Here is a picture of a Cairn.
You can how rocky and rough the stones are and how much digging it would take for these little dogs to get at the rodents.
Actually the West Highland White Terrier was not the original breed to keep rodents away from the Cairns. The Cairn Terrier was bred for this job and the Westy was a Cairn that was all white.
Most of the Cairn Terrier’s that were pure white were killed to keep the Cairn line without any white in the breed.
Someone said “Hey, why not create a new breed and thank goodness they did or we wouldn’t have the West Highland White Terrier today.
