The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier:
Wheaten Terrier is a great mix of terrier and working dog and does well with people with allergies.
The Wheaten Terrier is a native of Ireland. It has been recorded as being there for at least 200 years. It is said that the Wheaten is a relative of the Kerry Blue Terrier that came ashore during the Spanish Armada and mated with the local soft wheat colored terriers native to Ireland at the time. They combine the feistiness of a terrier with the calm steadiness of a working dog.
This sweet terrier is a medium-sized, strong and about 18 to 19 inches at the withers and weighing around 32 pounds. He has soft, silky, golden coat of warm color hair.
The Wheaten Terrier is a happy, steady dog with an air of self-confidence. He is alert and is interested in his surroundings.
One thing you should watch out for in this dog is being overly timid or aggressive. You need to socialize this dog well while a puppy so that either of these traits do not become a problem.
This dog is good for people with allergies as the coat does not shed.
As with all the terriers, they can be stubborn and feisty. After all they were bred to hunt, whether it be small vermin or larger prey they were meant to chase and track down game or rid the farmer of the rats and mice that were on the farm.
